If you are a seaman, I know that you are very much aware that the basic requirements of being a seafarer in the Philippines are having a Seaman’s book or also known as SIRB which stands for Seafarer’s Identification and Record Book and a valid Passport. The purpose of this book is to inform the employer about the seaman’s experience and training. Likewise, the passport serves as your main access to travel around to other country issued by our government agency.

For the maritime graduates, the two basic documents that you should have in your hand are the Passport and the Seaman’s book. Don’t ever trust any fixer that is present in the area to take over for your application. With that, I want to give you a summary on what and where you should go for you to have and avail a passport and a seaman’s book.

Why is it important to have a seaman’s book? It is very vital simply because this unique book contains the information’s about the name of the vessel, the official number and place of registry as well as the gross tonnage, rank, date of place of embarkation, disembarkation and the signature if the master. If you cannot have this seaman’s book in your hand, you will no longer allow entering the world of cruise ship.  Every seaman should carry the document while he’s on board, which is also an official and legal record of the seaman’s experience.

First and foremost, you have to settle your Transcript of Record. This is the very first thing that a new graduate must secure because it is your proof that you are a legitimate graduate. Also, you should provide a NBI Clearance with Visa Seaman. This is to assure that you have no criminal liabilities and accountabilities. Secure a copy of pictures; it could be 1x1, 2x2, or passport size. It is advisable to bring an extra copy of your pictures to avoid a scenario that you are desperate looking for a rush photographs. Also, don’t forget to bring your NSO Authenticated Birth Certificate because it is one of the very important documents that you need to present. Lastly, attend the training requirements for seaman’s book commonly known as Basic Safety Training and PSSR.
